Naprapathy means to correct the cause of the pain. Naprapathy has an ancestry in the Czech word "napravit", which suggests "to correct" and the Greek word "pathos" suggests "Suffering". Naprapathy is defined as a system for specific examination, diagnosis of manual processing and rehabilitation of pain and malfunction in the motion and support body. The Naprapathy manual therapy intends to reproduce the function, to lessen the pain in the Nevro musculuar system through the work of structures in and around the spine and other joints.

The occupation arose in 1907 by the fact that the American chiropractor Oakley Smith formulated the founding for Naprapathy. Since then, the profession has developed abundantly, and is currently based on modern research. 

The education is a 4-year full time education at Naprapathögskolan in Stockholm. In addition to education, the naprapath has an internship a whole year after. The naprapath has basic medicine with emphasis on manual therapy in his education. The education has support from the state's loan fund. Norway's Naprapatforbund was established in 1993. Membership assures mandatory patient and liability insurance. The membership requires an approved education from Naprapathögskolan in Stocholm.

Consultation procedures

To find the cause of the patient's problem, it is important to go through the problem, illness history and the life situation. The naprapath considers profession, training habits, work situation etc. It has been performed a series of tests to find the cause of the moving problem and the pain the patient has. The naprapath confirmes what structures that is affected, and whether it is an incomplete neurological or circulatory disturbances. The tests reveals also any more serious illnesses, where the patient is encouraged to contact his or hers doctor.

When treated by a naprapath its around 3-5 average visits. It can be more controls after some months. In acute states, fewer treatments are needed than a chronic problem. Most wrong postions and musculare pains in jaw, neck, shoulders, back, pelvic, and extremitites can be treated. Also whiplash, bone fragile and persons with "vague" ailments can be treated.
